MorphWiz App Reviews

Uninspiring sounds

I like the interface and the app functions well enough but the preset selection and sound generation engine is pretty stale. Sounds arent really conducive to inspiration. Its a shame. I wanted to like this app. Its sort of like a very polished theremin.

Great app, just remember to adjust the settings

I really dig this app but I got pretty frustrated at first with the latency (measured at 130msec) between touch and note start. Their FAQ reminds you to adjust the audio buffer size in Settings and now its manageable :)

Amazing

This app is one of the most amazing things Ive seen. I bought it on a whim, after Id watched many, many, many videos of people using it, including Jordans videos while he was designing it. The depth of customization is unreal, and Im WAY out of my depth with this one. But thats my fault, not the apps. I love what this app is capable of, and I need to do dedicate a lot more time to figuring it out. Im looking forward to it. For a first app, Mr Rudess, this is unbelievable!

Amazing!

It could use some more sound options, but otherwise, this app is an incredible iPad instrument, especially since I cant afford a Continuum Fingerboard any time soon. Some ideas: More sounds, like a synth choir, strings, and a classic sawtooth lead Optional precision sound controls for more diverse effects control. Optional one-over-the-other octave setup, like an organ.

Audiocopy and AudioPaste

I really like this app. Ive found its strength to be playing melodic solo lines, or single note bass lines, and it excels at this. The problem is that it is difficult to use this app with other apps. As of this writing it does not support AudioBus and I have not been able to get AudioCopy and AudioPaste to work properly. Each preset seems to have its own tempo and scale embedded. These are easy enough to change, but they tend to default back to the original settings and not the settings I have chosen. For example, Ill write a drum and bass loop in FL Studio Mobile, and use the AudioCopy feature. Ill open MorphWiz, find the sound I want to use and adjust the setting (scale, tempo, and length of the loop) and do an AudioPaste from within MorphWiz. Almost every time, the tempo and number of measures defaults back to the preset in MorpWiz rendering my pasted loop either chopped or with extra beats of silence at the end. Its also very difficult to set a tempo on MorphWiz. The slider seems simple enough, but when I lift my finger from it, it usually jump a beat or two in one direction. It would be nice to have a slider with tap up and tap down buttons so that the user could slide to the approximate tempo and then tap in the last few beats to make it precise. All of these things are problematic only if you are trying to use the app with other apps on your device (as most are trying to do now). As a stand alone cool synth, I love it. A five star review is forthcoming if integration with other apps (AudioBus) and AudioCopy and AudioPaste are supported/improved.

Amazing app, but..

I bought this app a while ago, on Christmas Day. Probably my favorite app. Its very easy to use, has a lot of neat presets, and is extremely customizable, down to the reverb and delay, as well as vibrato and chorus. However, after about 3 weeks of use, the app stopped working. I can still open it, create presets, and basically do anything I could, but I cant hear it.... I can hear the other apps (sample wiz, tachyon, etc.) perfectly fine, but the audio on this one quit. The app is a 5 star app, but this problem really dragged down my review.

Cool concept

This app is great for people branching out into ios music making. I have found that the latency still lags after I lowered it in the settings menu. Also, Audiobus is the wave of the future. I love all of the Jordan Rudess apps, but until they get set free with support for Audiobus, Ill just stick with SampleWiz and rate MorphWiz with 3 out of 5 stars.

Very good musical app. Jordan is a legend.

The idea of Pads and musical surfaces has been with us for a while, since the 70s really. This is one of the most creative endeavors on the iPad period. Dont expect to play familiar songs of standards but you will break ground. I hope to see updates and instruments and I will be happy to pay handsomely for them. This guy is very very good with code. This is a tight professional application and one you can trust a live show with.

No longer compatible with my main apps

I was using this app quite a bit with other music apps and everything worked well... Not any more. I use to be able to get a drone going in Mixtikl and then boot up Morphwiz for some melodies, but now MorphWiz just silences Mixtikl... cant use them both together on the same device. While my other music apps seem to be well supported with frequent updates, MorphWiz seems to have been abandoned... last update being Aug 2010. I hope this isnt the case because I would like to use it again someday. Maybe with better integration with other apps, Audiobus support and maybe some new sounds.

Very expressive

Instead of being a virtual representation of an existing instrument, its a whole new instrument in its own right. It feels a little cramped on the iPad Mini if you set the range at 2 or more octaves. I would also suggest that you turn multitasking gestures off while using this app.

Will use other performance apps more

***Update*** Adding audiobus and the UI improvements make this app a bit better. But controller style features for MIDI and a global way to turn off the unnecessary and distracting visuals are still needed for me to find this app useful. ***orig. reveiw*** I purchased morphwiz because it was highly acclaimed and seemed flexible but it turns out that it may be more flash than substance. I feel like I will spend so much time turning OFF the unnecessary and frankly ugly graphics that I will get less done than I will with some other options. (Seriously how many clowns did you guys hire to barf on my iPad?) And yes, It matters. I find these graphics uninspiring to the point of distraction. The sound is interesting but so many of the presets lack subtlety. That has made it hard to quickly determine what this thing can do "for real". The included presets seem to more for wow factor that for performance. Of course I could take the time to discover the power of the synth for myself but I would like to have more to go on before making that commitment. Here is a big sticking point, no audiobus yet. I thought perhaps the developers just havent gotten around to it... So I checked the update history... Oops. No updates for how long now? O.K. I am beginning to see the picture. IF you ever update this app please kindly consider these suggestions. 1. Audiobus. 2. Themes that can be globally applied including one or two that are very basic and focus on the task of making music. 3. A few more presets that show of the musical capabilities of a performance oriented synth like this. I may grow to like or even love this app but it will be an uphill slog.

Read the warning!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just pressed update all for a bunch of apps and didnt notice the warning about danger if you are running iOS 5.x Anyway I updated and now as it states, app will not even start or open Please fix as I loved this app

Good stuff

Audiobus Upadate: I like the redesign, still works well, still a blast to play. This app is crazy. Unique would be an understatement. Its similar to Bebot, but a bit more advanced, and crazy. Some of the presets are pretty much unusable. I think more to just show off what Morph is capable of. But, hey, thats why the ability to adjust the affects is there!

The new update rocks my iPad 1st gen!

Thanks, guys! Theres still a lot of first gen iPad owners out here whove been with you from the start. Keep up the great work!

Great update!

Morphwiz was the main reason I bought an iPad to begin with several years ago. The update has been a long time coming and is so nice to work with AudioBus. Plus the previous latency issues seem to be barely noticeable now. The whole thing is much more musical. Awesome work, guys. Mr. Rudess and crew have once again brought wonderful inspiration to music making.

Fixed!!!

It is true, this most recent update has restored the old sounds you made before the earlier update (as it said in the update details), so, once again, you guys have made it back up to 5 stars from me. Now the app has your old sounds, and an improved interface. Keep up the greatness, Wizdom!

Retraction

Ok, it took a few weeks, but they fixed... No, IMPROVED the already greatest app on the planet. I had some words about the update for us "old iPad" users, but they did it justice. Thanks guys! Back to gigs and rockin with my Morphwiz!

Not a 5 star

Im giving it 3 stars mainly because I think they paid for the other ratings which really disses me off. Considering the apps which have 500 ratings that hold their 5 stars those apps EARNED 5 stars! Its a freakin $1 app they sell for $10 because Jordan endorsed it. Yes it sounds neat, but its a neat toy. I like my 5 star apps, I dont expect to publish an album or rock a stage with them, but some of them are very capable. Anyone "rocking" this app needs a wizard hat and cape to match. Jordan is great, this app is not. It probably deserves 3 1/2 to 4 stars.

lousy customer support

cool app, but still have yet to receive a response from the dev regarding audiobus questions. Im not pleased that they removed the internal rec. feature, and havent purchased audiobus yet.. whack sandbag... nice app though.. shame the devs are chumps

The one instrument I keep coming back to

Ive had this program for years. I have many instruments on my iPad, but this is the one app I invariably get drawn back to. I love it, and my kids do too.
